Strata Florida Abbey

Strata Florida Abbey stands in a quiet valley near Tregaron in Ceredigion. Founded in 1164 by Robert FitzStephen, it became a key Cistercian house under the patronage of the Welsh prince Rhys ap Gruffydd. The abbey’s name comes from the Afon Fflur, a small river that flows nearby. For centuries it served as a burial place for Welsh princes and a centre of learning. The Brut y Tywysogion, a major chronicle of early Welsh history, was compiled here. The abbey’s past is marked by conflict and change. In 1212 King John ordered its destruction, but a fine spared it. During Owain Glyndŵr’s rebellion, English forces took the site and used it as a military base. After Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1539, the buildings were stripped for materials. Only parts of the refectory and dormitory survived, later becoming a private house. Today the ruins show the scale of the medieval monastery. An arched entrance and low walls outline the church and chapels. A modern shelter protects excavated medieval tiles, including one showing a man at a mirror. The graveyard still holds burials, with a memorial to the poet Dafydd ap Gwilym beside an ancient yew. Nearby, a replica stone in the Chapter House honours the princes buried here.
