Granarium Rechnitz

The Schüttkasten Rechnitz stands in Rechnitz, a town in Burgenland near the southern border. It is a four-storey granary built in the late 17th century as part of Rechnitz Castle. The building still carries the Batthyány family coat of arms above its north front. Grain surpluses from the Oberwart district, mainly wheat and rye, were once stored here before being sent on to Wiener Neustadt for sale. The granary’s thick walls and steep hip roof kept the harvest dry and safe through the centuries. Today it is protected as an official monument. Inside, visitors find a simple stone structure with heavy wooden floors and narrow staircases. The upper rooms are lit by small square windows set in thick walls. Outside, the granary sits beside the railway station on Bahnhofstraße, close to the town centre.
