Schloss Rohoncz

Schloss Rechnitz once stood in the heart of Rechnitz, a town in Burgenland near the Hungarian border. Built in the 13th century, it became the seat of the powerful Batthyány family for centuries. The castle was a vast complex with over 200 rooms arranged around a large arcaded courtyard. Its grand front facade featured a neoclassical clock tower and four corner towers. Inside, elaborate stucco ceilings and ceiling paintings decorated several rooms on the first floor. The castle played a significant role in local history. In 1687, Adam II Batthyány granted protection to the Jewish community in Rechnitz, allowing it to grow. By the early 20th century, it passed to Heinrich Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza. During World War II, the SS used the castle as a headquarters, and nearby events led to a tragic massacre. Heavy damage in 1945 left only remnants, including parts of the retaining wall and cellar structures. Today, visitors can still see traces of the castle’s past. The towering retaining wall along Schlossberggasse remains visible. Below ground, cellar structures and a well with an old stone lantern survive. New buildings now occupy parts of the site, but the remaining ruins and walls offer a glimpse into the castle’s former grandeur. The area around the former castle site provides a quiet space to reflect on its layered history.
