Eichelnkopf

The Eichelnkopf is a hill in the Harz Mountains of Lower Saxony, rising 545.7 metres above sea level. It stands about 3.5 kilometres east of Herzberg am Harz and 2.5 kilometres southwest of the Großer Knollen. The entire hill is covered in dense forest with no clearings. Its nearest neighbours are the Mittelecke to the north and the Scharzfeld area to the south. The landscape is typical of the central Harz, with steep slopes and thick coniferous growth. The hill is worth the journey for walkers and mountain bikers seeking a challenge. A trail crosses the summit from the north, and the final 300 metres approach the top with a gradient of up to 34 per cent. On the southern slope, a path passes the 300-year-old ‘Owl Oak’, a notable veteran tree. Geologists also value the site for its rare Silurian argillaceous slate outcrop on the eastern slopes. These dark slates date back hundreds of millions of years and are among the oldest rocks in the Harz range. Visitors find quiet forest paths and sweeping views once they reach the summit. The summit itself is unmarked but offers open sightlines through the surrounding treetops. The Owl Oak stands on a gentle southern spur, its gnarled branches a landmark for walkers. The slate outcrop is small but exposed, showing fine layers of ancient stone. The contrast between the dark rock and the green woodland makes the site striking. The air is cool even in summer, and the only sounds are those of the forest.
