Glanzing Parish Church stands in the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling, a quiet suburb where the city’s greenery meets the edge of the Vienna Woods. The church occupies a small plot in Glanzinggasse, surrounded by residential streets and the remains of the old garden site where the first wooden church once stood. Its modern design contrasts with the traditional architecture of nearby villas, marking a break from the area’s earlier 19th-century character. The building was designed by Josef Lackner and completed in 1970 after years of provisional arrangements. Before this, services were held in a garage and a children’s clinic chapel during the mid-20th century. The church’s name, Verkündigung des Herren, reflects its dedication to the Annunciation of the Lord. The church’s history reflects the struggles and persistence of the local Catholic community. After World War II, the parish used a temporary wooden structure for services before plans for a permanent church could be realised. The decision to build on land near the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna came decades after the first calls for a local church. The architect Josef Lackner created a functional yet striking modernist building, completed in just over a year. In 2008, the church was recognised as a protected monument, acknowledging its architectural and historical significance. Its listing highlights the building’s role in post-war Vienna’s religious and urban development. Visitors find a clean-lined concrete and glass church set back from the street, its form both simple and expressive. Inside, the space is open and light, with high windows allowing natural illumination. The altar area is uncluttered, focusing attention on the liturgical elements. The surrounding neighbourhood offers quiet streets lined with mature trees and villas from the early 20th century. A short walk leads into the Vienna Woods, where walking paths wind through forested hills.
