Cwm Clais Castle

Castell Cwm Clais stands in Cwmafon, near Cwmavon in Neath Port Talbot. It is a small medieval earthwork castle built between the late 11th and mid-12th centuries. Unlike later castles, it has no stone walls or a defensive bailey. Instead, it consists of a low mound of earth and stone surrounded by a ditch. The Normans introduced this type of fortification to Britain from France. Welsh rulers later adopted the design for their own defences. The site is recognised as one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Britain. Cadw, the Welsh historic environment service, has listed it as a scheduled monument under reference GM289. The largest concentration of such earthwork castles lies along the historic Welsh Marches. This border region includes parts of Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. Visitors find a simple grassy mound with a shallow ditch around it. The remains are modest but give a clear sense of how early castles were constructed. The surrounding area is rural, with farmland and quiet lanes. The site offers a quiet place to walk and imagine the past. No grand ruins remain, but the shape of the earthworks still marks where a small fortress once stood.
