Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites

Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Wiltshire. It covers two large areas about 24 kilometres apart rather than a single monument. The site was inscribed in 1986 and contains more than 700 archaeological features. There are also 160 scheduled monuments covering 415 items. Ownership is shared among several organisations and private owners. The Stonehenge area centres on the famous prehistoric circle and includes many related monuments. These include Stonehenge Avenue, Woodhenge, Durrington Walls and Silbury Hill. The Avebury area, 27 kilometres north, centres on the massive Avebury Henge. It also contains West Kennet Avenue, West Kennet Long Barrow and The Sanctuary. Visitors find a landscape rich in ancient remains. At Stonehenge, the great sarsen circle stands within a surrounding earthwork. Nearby, the Alexander Keiller Museum and Salisbury Museum display finds from the area. At Avebury, the huge henge and stone circles can be explored alongside Silbury Hill and Windmill Hill.
