Heel Stone

The Heel Stone stands just outside the main entrance of Stonehenge, a solitary sarsen block set within the Avenue that leads to the ancient earthwork. It rises about 4.7 metres above ground, though another 1.2 metres of its length remains buried. The stone leans sharply southwest, tilting nearly 27 degrees from the vertical, giving it an unmistakable presence. At its base it measures 7.7 metres around, and it weighs roughly 35 tonnes. A shallow ditch, the Heelstone Ditch, surrounds the base, marking its place in the landscape. Archaeologists have studied the Heel Stone since the early 20th century, uncovering its hidden portion and recording its tilt. Excavations led by R J C Atkinson in the 1950s and later by Cleal, Walker and Montague in the 1990s helped establish its dimensions and position. Research by Michael Pitts in the 1970s and 1980s confirmed its alignment with the Avenue and the solstice sunrise. These investigations show how the stone was deliberately placed to frame the horizon at key moments of the year. Its massive size and careful setting link it to the builders of Stonehenge. Visitors approach the Heel Stone along the Avenue, seeing it rise against the sky before reaching the main stone circle. The surrounding ditch creates a slight hollow, adding to its prominence in the open grassland. From this point the Avenue stretches back toward the River Avon, while Stonehenge stands a short walk away. The stone’s lean and sheer scale make it a striking landmark in the otherwise flat Wiltshire landscape. Its position outside the circle suggests it once played a role in ceremonies or sightlines tied to the solstice.
