One Churchill Place

One Churchill Place stands in Canary Wharf, a business district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is a 32-storey skyscraper that serves as the headquarters of Barclays Bank. At 156 metres tall, it is the 13th-tallest office block in the United Kingdom and the sixth tallest in the Docklands. The building was formally opened in June 2005 by the Chairman of Barclays, Matthew Barrett. It brought together Barclays offices across London into a single location. The skyscraper was designed by HOK International and built by Canary Wharf Contractors. After the 9/11 attacks, the design was changed from 50 storeys to 32. The building is constructed around four staircase columns with a large central column for lifts and toilets. The manual states the columns could hold everyone inside in a security alert. In 2026, Barclays acquired a 999-year leasehold interest in the building. Visitors find a modern office tower linked by walkways to the Canada Square shopping mall and Canary Wharf Underground station. Floors 18 to 20 were once leased to BGC Partners and Cantor Fitzgerald. Before 2012, Olympic Delivery Teams worked on several floors. Part of level 17 housed the Metropolitan Police. The building’s design reflects security concerns from the 9/11 era.
