Camberley Theatre

Camberley Theatre stands in the centre of Camberley, a town in north-west Surrey about 47 kilometres south-west of London. The building opened in 1966 and replaced an earlier assembly hall that had served the growing settlement. Yorktown, the older part of town to the west, still keeps its 19th-century character with narrow streets and named alleys. The theatre sits close to the A30 London Road and the Blackwater Canal, which once carried bricks for the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. The theatre is worth the journey for its role in local arts and its links to famous names. Victorian composer Arthur Sullivan attended Yorktown School as a child and later wrote some of his light operas while living nearby. In the 1980s, musician Rick Wakeman lived in Camberley and often performed in the area. The theatre itself hosts plays, musicals and dance shows throughout the year, drawing audiences from across Surrey and Hampshire. Inside, the theatre has a main auditorium with comfortable seating arranged in a fan shape. The stage is large enough for full-scale productions, and the lighting and sound systems were modernised in recent years. Outside, the theatre shares the space with public artworks such as Ken Ford’s sculpture outside the borough offices. The surrounding streets still carry names from the town’s past, like Teckels Avenue and Stanhope Road, adding to the sense of place.
