St Tarcisius Church, Camberley

St Tarcisius Church stands on London Road in Camberley, a Roman Catholic parish church built between 1923 and 1924 to a design by Frederick Walters. It occupies a site given in 1879 by Lady Southwell and replaced an iron church erected in 1884. The building is Grade II listed and made of Bargate stone, with a crenellated tower on the north-west corner. Inside, the nave ceiling is pine and the original oak pews remain in place. A five-bay traceried window lights the chancel above the altar. The church was planned as a permanent memorial to British Catholic officers who died in the First World War. Its foundation stone was laid in 1923 by Bishop Peter Amigo and it opened the following year. It served as chaplaincy to Catholics at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was consecrated in 1926 by Cardinal Francis Bourne. In 1935, Paul Woodroffe designed stained-glass windows for the building. Visitors enter through a porch beneath the tower and pass marble memorial plaques in the porch. The arcade and transept arches are Bath stone, while traceried windows punctuate the walls. The transepts are gabled, and above the entrance a traceried window frames the light. The church sits next to The Atrium Shopping Centre on the northern edge of Camberley.
