Essener Eck

The Essener Eck is a 3 005-metre peak in the Venedigergruppe range of East Tyrol. It stands at the western end of the Maurerkamm ridge within the municipality of Prägraten am Großvenediger. The mountain overlooks the Umbaltal valley on its western side and the Umbalkees glacier to the north. Climbers reach the summit by starting from the Clarahütte hut in the Umbaltal. The route follows a marked path northward before turning off into a steep, pathless zone of scree and rock. After gaining the gentler slopes above, walkers traverse eastward to the summit ridge. From the top, a narrow crest leads on to the higher Südliche Malhamspitze, passing the Niederer and Hoher Aderscheitel along the way. The final section involves easy scrambling on the Westgrat before the Südliche Malhamspitze is reached. The whole route is graded I and is used mainly by alpinists familiar with high Alpine terrain. Views from the summit extend across the Venediger peaks and deep into the Umbaltal below.
