Congleton Museum stands in the Market Square of Congleton, a town beside the River Dane in Cheshire. It occupies part of the old town hall complex, once the Victorian police station. The building was refurbished with help from Regeneration Funding and opened in 2002. A group formed the Congleton Museum Trust in 1985 to collect local artefacts. The Heritage Lottery Fund gave over £200,000 towards the project. The Duke of Gloucester performed the official opening later that year.
The museum tells Congleton’s story through displays on prehistory, the Civil War, industry and the Second World War. A 1500BC burial urn and a 930AD log boat are among the oldest items. Two 17th-century coin hoards and a cannonball from Biddulph Hall recall later conflicts. John Bradshaw, a former mayor, signed Charles I’s death warrant during the Civil War. Relief maps show how the town changed over centuries. Temporary exhibitions often feature work by local schools.
Visitors find a ground-floor display area and an upper floor with a research library and education room. The library holds town charters, account books and private papers. An image bank contains over 5,000 photographs of Congleton. Local history walks and talks take place regularly. The museum also offers a Second World War Evacuee Experience for children.
