Clapham Common tube station
Clapham Common station stands at the eastern edge of Clapham Common in the London Borough of Lambeth. It opened in 1900 as the southern end of the City and South London Railway before the line was extended south in 1926. The station sits between Clapham North and Clapham South on the Morden branch of the Northern line. It belongs to London fare zone 2 and is served by trains every two to six minutes for much of the day. The station has two entrances: a 1920s domed building to the west and a modern steel-and-glass pavilion to the east. Clapham Common and Clapham North are the only deep-level Northern line stations with narrow island platforms about 3.7 metres wide. Beneath the station lie deep-level air-raid shelters with entrances on Clapham High Street. In 2016, cat photographs replaced all advertisements for two weeks through a crowdfunded project. Inside, the station’s curved platforms lead to the modern entrance hall. Outside, Clapham Common’s wide green space offers a place to wait or walk after a journey. London Buses serve the area day and night, linking the station to surrounding streets. The combination of historic architecture, modern design and public transport makes it a practical stop in south London.
