Gleirschtal

The Gleirschtal is a side valley of the Hinterautal in the Karwendel range. It lies between the Erlspitz group to the west, the Gleirsch-Halltal chain to the east and north, and the Nordkette to the south. The valley is drained by the Gleirschbach, which flows northwest and joins the Isar below the Gleirschklamm. The valley owes its name to the Gleirschtal and the Halltal, following the tradition begun by Hermann von Barth, who first opened up the Karwendel. The Gleirsch-Halltal chain is one of the four main ridges in the Karwendel. The Gleirschbach leaves the valley through a narrow gorge before reaching the Isar. A popular base is the Möslalm at 1,262 metres, used by hikers aiming for peaks in the Erlspitz group, the western Gleirsch-Halltal chain and the Nordkette. Mountain bikers ride the closed road to the alm or continue southeast to the Pfeishütte at 1,922 metres via the Samertal. The whole area offers routes for different levels of fitness and experience.
