Headstone Manor and Museum

Headstone Manor and Museum stands in the London Borough of Harrow, within Headstone Manor Park. The site centres on a moated manor house built in 1310, the earliest surviving timber-framed building in Middlesex. Four historic farm buildings survive: the Great Barn of 1506, the Small Barn with 14th-century foundations, and the late 18th-century Granary moved here in 1991. All are listed and scheduled, showing work from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The moat, still filled, is the only surviving filled moat in Middlesex. The museum tells Harrow’s story through its collections and exhibitions across the four buildings. The manor passed from archbishops to Henry VIII, then to private owners who added wings and façades. The Great Barn’s oak frame measures 43 metres long and nine metres high, restored in the 1970s and again in 2014. The Small Barn’s burnt remains were rebuilt by 2017 for archaeological displays. The Granary, moved from Pinner Park Farm, now serves as a learning space. Visitors find the moated house surrounded by water, its 1770s brick front giving the manor its present look. The Great Barn’s weather-boarded walls and tiled roof house museum displays, while the Small Barn shows Roman pottery and medieval foundations. The Granary’s many windows mark it out among the farm buildings. Nearby, the Moat Café offers refreshments and a gift shop. The site links past and present with over 15,000 objects from Harrow’s social and industrial history.
