Leinfelden-Echterdingen lies on the Filder plain south of Stuttgart, between 341 and 501 metres above sea level. Its four districts—Leinfelden, Echterdingen, Musberg and Stetten—were once separate villages. The area is framed by the Schönbuch forest to the west and south and the Siebenmühlental valley to the south. The town’s history reaches back to the 12th century, when Echterdingen was first recorded. In 1908 Ferdinand von Zeppelin landed his airship LZ 4 on a meadow near Echterdingen after engine failure. During the Second World War the airfield became an SS-run subcamp of Natzweiler concentration camp, where Jewish prisoners were forced to repair bomb damage. Today the white hangar known as the Eskimohalle still stands on the former airfield. Visitors walk through quiet streets lined with Protestant churches built after the Reformation. In Echterdingen the medieval parish church overlooks the market square. Musberg’s village pond and the restored mills along the streams add to the rural feel. The town centre offers cafés and small shops, while the surrounding meadows and woods provide walking paths.
