Plattenhardt Castle

The Burg Plattenhardt stands on a quiet rectangle of grass at the corner of Panorama and Römer streets in Plattenhardt, a suburb of Filderstadt in the Esslingen district. The site once held a medieval fortification built by the Lords of Bernhausen, but in 1287 it was burned down during a raid led by Count Eberhard of Württemberg. After the attack the ruins were left to decay and the family line died out in the 14th century. The surviving earthworks still show traces of the original wall and ditch that once surrounded the stronghold. Because the plot lies in a cultivated garden area, it has escaped modern building and farming, so the medieval outlines remain clear. The Lords of Bernhausen also owned the village itself, making Plattenhardt a branch seat of their family. Visitors find a modest open space marked only by low mounds and shallow trenches. The setting is peaceful, with no modern intrusions, and the view stretches across well-tended gardens. The site recalls a brief but turbulent moment in the region’s past when local nobles clashed over land and loyalty to the king.
