Holy Trinity Church, Leicester

Holy Trinity Church stands on Regent Road south of Leicester city centre, a Victorian building in red-purple brick with limestone dressings. It was designed by Sydney Smirke in 1838 and later remodelled by Samuel Sanders Teulon in 1872. The church sits beside the University of Leicester, De Montfort University and the Leicester Royal Infirmary. It belongs to the Evangelical and Charismatic movements within Anglicanism. Elaine Sutherland became Vicar in March 2020, supported by Associate Vicars James Norris and Jitesh Patel. The church was created under the Church Building Act of 1818 to serve a new suburb as Leicester grew. Its interior once had wooden pews, a central aisle for the middle classes and balconies for servants. A major reordering in 2018–2019 created a coffee house in the entrance area and extended the balcony. Five contemporary stained-glass windows in the chancel depict the Parable of the Sower, while the end wall shows the Last Supper in marble. Visitors find a spacious worship area with a stage reordered for modern services. Morning gatherings are family-oriented with live band music, while evenings draw students and young adults. The church runs outreach programmes including ‘Triangle’ for the homeless and hosts the Alpha course. Services are streamed on YouTube and Facebook. The building and surrounding streets form part of the New Walk conservation area.
