Burg Runder Berg
The Burg Runder Berg stands on a conical hill rising to about 710 metres above sea level, 2.5 kilometres west of Bad Urach. The site is a ruined early medieval hillfort linked to an Alamannic settlement on a summit plateau measuring 120 metres long and up to 40 metres wide. Excavations between 1967 and 1984 uncovered remains of two defensive walls that once encircled the plateau. The fort’s Alamannic inhabitants left behind traces of their daily life on the narrow summit. Archaeologists have recognised fragments of buildings and storage pits from the 7th to 8th centuries. These finds show how the small community organised itself within the confines of the hilltop. Visitors reach the site along a short path that climbs from the surrounding woodland. At the top they find low stone foundations marking the line of the old walls. The plateau offers wide views across the Swabian Alb’s rolling countryside. The remains are quiet reminders of a settlement that once thrived more than twelve centuries ago.
