Cultural heritage D-2-7146-0003 in Perlesreut

A small medieval castle once stood on the Schloßberg hill above the Biberbach stream near Perlesreut in Lower Bavaria. The site is marked as a protected archaeological monument, showing traces of a vanished fortress and later manor house. On old maps from the 1830s the roughly rectangular enclosure measured fifty-two metres north to south and forty-eight metres east to west. The castle belonged to the Hauzenberg family, local officials of the Bishop of Passau, from the 15th century onwards. Later owners included Joachim Wieninger, who acquired Bibereck in 1619, and the Freiherrn von Gleißenthal, who sold it to the Bishop of Passau in 1700. By 1891 the defences still included a ring ditch, outer rampart and several towers. Today only faint earthworks remain on the gently rising hilltop north of the field track. The ring wall’s outline appears as a low mound and shallow hollows where the towers once stood. Visitors can walk the old perimeter and imagine the vanished castle, set above the quiet Biberbach valley in the rolling countryside of eastern Bavaria.
