Museum of Communication Hamburg

The Museum für Kommunikation Hamburg stood in the former Alte Oberpostdirektion building beside Stephansplatz square. It focused on the history of postal services and telecommunications in Germany. The collection highlighted the challenges of communication at sea. The museum was part of the Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation foundation. It closed permanently on 19 October 2009 and was later liquidated. The museum’s displays explored how people sent messages before modern technology. Exhibits included historical postal equipment and early communication devices. It took part in the Long Night of Museums events in Hamburg. The building itself was an example of 19th-century architecture. Its location made it a notable landmark in the city. Visitors could see artefacts related to maritime communication and postal history. The exhibits showed how messages crossed oceans in earlier centuries. The museum’s rooms were arranged to guide people through the evolution of communication. The surroundings included Stephansplatz square, a quiet spot in the city centre.
