Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg

Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg is a public park in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg quarter, covering 29 hectares on a landscaped rubble hill built from Second World War debris. The park’s slopes and plateaus were shaped in the 1960s from construction waste cleared from central districts such as Alexanderplatz. It opened in 1969 under its present name after large-scale planting with hardy European trees. The Oderbruchkippe, once a double-summit dump, now forms one of Berlin’s more prominent artificial elevations at about 90–91 metres. Allotment gardens border the park to the north while post-war housing estates lie to the south and west. The site’s origins as a rubble landscape have inspired artistic and cultural projects, including a 2013 feature on found shards in the layers. A bronze relief frieze by Birgit Horota runs along the Maiglöckchenstraße entrance, narrating episodes from the district’s history and the park’s creation. Other sculptures include Erwin Damerow’s bronze group Rodelnde Kinder on the upper slopes and Werner Stötzer’s Sitzender Junge relocated near Erich-Weinert-Straße. A small community vineyard cultivates Riesling on a sunny slope maintained by local enthusiasts. Visitors find walking and jogging paths winding through open meadows and woodland thickets. Winter sledding is possible on the slopes, and foxes and numerous bird species are regularly observed. The mosaic of habitats provides micro-climate benefits and supports urban biodiversity. Paths lead to viewpoints across the park and beyond, while the public-art trail connects key entrances with works by several sculptors. The surroundings include convenient access from tram and bus stops along Hohenschönhauser Straße.
