Schwimm- und Sprunghalle im Europasportpark

The Schwimm- und Sprunghalle im Europasportpark stands in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district, next to the Landsberger Allee S-Bahn station. It is a large indoor swimming and diving complex built in the early 1990s by French architect Dominique Perrault. The building sits partly below a landscaped plateau planted with apple trees, so only the flat wooden roofs appear above ground. The hall regularly hosts national and international competitions, including German championships and European events. More than half a million visitors use the pools each year. It serves as a federal base for diving and state centres for swimming and diving. A new water-treatment system added in 2003 cut costs and improved environmental performance. Inside, a 50-metre competition pool and a separate diving area with towers up to ten metres high provide space for training and events. Smaller pools for therapy, children and warm-up surround the main basins. A bistro, gym and shop sit along the concourse. Steps lead down from the planted plateau to the entrances, giving the whole site a calm, park-like approach.
