Schloss Strössendorf

Schloss Strössendorf stands in Strössendorf, a village that is now part of Altenkunstadt in Upper Franconia. The building is a medieval castle complex that has been continuously inhabited for centuries. It remains in the possession of the von Seckendorff family and is protected as a listed monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments. Archaeological finds show that the site includes both medieval and earlier remains, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark. The castle’s history reaches back to the 12th century, when it began as a border fortification under Charlemagne. Over the centuries, ownership passed through several noble families, including the von Kunstadt, von Schaumberg, and von Seckendorff lines. Key figures such as Rudolf von Widence and Gundeloch Marschalk von Kunstadt shaped its early development. The castle was expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries, including the construction of a massive bergfried with walls over a metre thick. Later, during the Bauernkrieg of 1525, the castle was plundered and burned, but rebuilt within five years. Today the castle ensemble includes the main residential building, the late-medieval St Katharina’s chapel, and a landscaped park with former stables. The three-winged structure encloses a small inner courtyard, while the isolated south-eastern wehr tower adds to the fortified appearance. The westernmost wing, known as the Jungfernbau, was added around 1600. Though not open to the public, the site remains a vivid example of Franconian castle architecture and its layered history.
