Teichl

The Teichl is a river in southern Upper Austria, flowing through the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen region. It rises on the Wurzeralm in the Warscheneck mountains and disappears underground at the Teichlschwinde swallow hole before reappearing at the Teichlursprung spring. Near Steyrbrücke it joins the Steyr. The name comes from a Slavic word meaning ‘the quiet, still or gentle one’, first recorded in 1223. Anglers rate the Teichl as one of Austria’s best salmonid waters, while gentle rapids make it a popular paddle for wild-water novices. Five small streams feed it: Klammbach, Seebach, Dambach, Pießling and Hinterer Rettenbach. Three villages lie along its banks—Spital am Pyhrn, Roßleithen and St. Pankraz—each shaped by the river’s presence. Visitors follow the valley paths between limestone cliffs and alpine meadows. The river alternates between quiet pools and lively riffles, framed by spruce and beech woods. In St. Pankraz the blue wave in the municipal coat of arms recalls the Teichl’s winding course. The clear water and surrounding peaks offer quiet walks or short climbs for those who want to see where the stream vanishes and returns.
