Rote Wand

The Rote Wand is a 1 872-metre peak in the Totes Gebirge range in Upper Austria. Its south face glows red, giving the mountain its name. The ridge runs east from Warscheneck past Toten Mann to the Rote Wand. In winter the summit draws skiers on popular tours. On the western side a climbing garden offers routes for rock enthusiasts. Climbers and walkers reach the top by two marked paths. Way 201 starts at Linzer Haus and Way 293 begins at Dümlerhütte. Both routes climb through alpine meadows and past sheer cliffs. The red rock walls tower above the valleys below. On clear days the view stretches to the Dachstein and the Enns valley. From the summit visitors look down on the surrounding high karst plateau. The red face dominates the southern horizon. To the west the climbing garden’s routes are clearly visible. The air is thin and the silence complete except for the wind. The panorama includes the Warscheneck and the Priel groups.
