Gutshaus Seggerde

Schloss Seggerde stands in the village of Seggerde, part of Oebisfelde-Weferlingen in the Börde district of Sachsen-Anhalt. The building began as a simple fortification to protect against Slavic raids in the 13th century. By 1616 it had become a water castle owned by Statius von Münchhausen, who gave it as dowry to his daughter Engel. Werner Friedrich von Spiegel began a classical-style rebuild in 1833, turning the medieval stronghold into a three-winged manor. The estate’s history includes marriages that shaped its ownership, such as Ehrengard Melusine von Spiegel’s union with Ernst Ludwig Freiherr von Spiegel zum Desenberg in 1749. Werner Friedrich added an English landscape park with two large lakes, an orangery and a palm house during the 1830s. The surrounding water moats remain from the days when this was a defended island site. Visitors walk through the park’s avenues and past the lakes created for the 19th-century redesign. The three wings of the manor still enclose the original courtyard, while the moats mark where the water castle once stood. Occasional concerts are held inside the house, and the park once belonged to the ‘Gartenträume’ network until 2017. The family regained the property after 1990 and still own it today.
