DW Stadium

The Brick Community Stadium stands in Robin Park, Wigan, on flat ground beside the River Douglas. It is a single-tier, rectangular stadium built of steel and concrete. Wigan Warriors rugby league club and Wigan Athletic football club play their home games here. The stadium was completed in 1999 by Alfred McAlpine for two local clubs that had spent decades at smaller grounds. The stadium has hosted international rugby league matches and top-flight football. Its record crowd of 25,133 watched Wigan Athletic play Manchester United in 2008. Wigan Warriors’ average attendance rose by more than a third after moving in, while Wigan Athletic’s crowds more than doubled. The stadium has also seen legal disputes over policing costs and fixture clashes between the two clubs. Inside, four stands surround the pitch without corners. The East Stand is named after Billy Boston, the West Stand after the club’s old ground. The roof is held by steel girders that hang beneath it. Outside, the River Douglas flows past the northern side of the stadium.
