Greater Manchester Combined Authority

Greater Manchester Combined Authority is the administrative body for Greater Manchester in North West England. It brings together leaders from the ten metropolitan boroughs and an elected mayor. The authority holds powers over transport, housing, planning and carbon reduction across the region. The GMCA was set up in 2011 to replace earlier joint boards and give Greater Manchester a stronger voice. It was the first such combined authority since the county council was abolished in 1986. Powers were devolved from central government to help manage local services more effectively. Visitors will find no single building to tour, but the authority’s work shapes the city region every day. Its strategies guide new homes, apprenticeships and green energy projects across Greater Manchester. The Transport for Greater Manchester committee runs bus, tram and train services under the GMCA’s oversight.
