Jüdischer Friedhof Lackenbach

The Jewish cemetery in Lackenbach stands in the small market town of Lackenbach in Burgenland. It covers about one hectare beside the Bergstraße and has nearly 1,800 graves. The oldest headstone dates from 1729, showing the site’s long history. During the Second World War the cemetery also received burials of Roma and Sinti. A fence was installed to separate these graves from Jewish ones, because Jewish law forbids joint burial of Jews and non-Jews. In the mid-1990s the Verein Schalom carried out a full restoration of the cemetery. Visitors find a quiet, fenced burial ground with rows of weathered headstones. The oldest stones bear Hebrew inscriptions worn by time. The site remains under official protection as a cultural monument.
