Pfarrkirche Lackenbach

The Roman Catholic parish church in Lackenbach stands on rising farmland in the village of Lackenbach in Burgenland. It is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and belongs to the Deutschkreutz deanery. The church has protected status.
The first record of a church in Lackenbach dates from 1222, when it was called ‘villa Sancte Marie’. A priest is mentioned in 1410, but the parish had no building of its own until the 16th century. Erasmus Teuffl designed a chapel for the nearby castle between 1548 and 1552. After a fire in 1806, the castle dining hall became the new chapel. Plans for a separate church were revived in 1953 by parish priest Gustav Schwarz and completed in 1962 under architect Johann Petermair.
The church faces north and seats about three hundred people. Its barrel-vaulted nave has a sandstone altar on three columns. A baroque painting of Saint Nicholas hangs on the east wall, rescued from the castle chapel. Above the high altar is an 18th-century crucifix. Two larch-wood figures of Saints Peter and Paul stand inside, and a seven-stop organ from 1926 by Josef Huber of Eisenstadt completes the furnishings.
