Kommende Burmönken

The Johanniterkommende Burmönken was a medieval commandery of the Knights of St John in East Frisia. It stood on a sandy ridge between the villages of Leerhafe and Asel, close to the town of Wittmund. The name Burmönken, meaning ‘farmstead by the monks’, still marks the spot where the order once held sway. Founded around 1200, it became the only Knights Hospitaller house in the bishopric of Bremen’s eastern Frisian district. By 1319 it appears in records as a recognised member of the order’s network, alongside Jemgum and Abbingwehr. Its annual income of 350 gulden placed it among the wealthiest commanderies in the region. When Count Edzard I and Edo Wiemken met here in 1496 to settle a dispute over Kniphausen, the site showed its importance as a place for negotiation. Yet after the Reformation its lands were seized and the buildings dismantled, leaving only scattered stones in farm walls. Today the site is a quiet field where archaeologists found layers of imported soil and medieval floors. A few granite blocks from the old church lie near farm entrances, silent witnesses to the commandery’s vanished life. The surrounding countryside of heath and pasture keeps the memory of the order’s brief but influential presence.
