Gasselhöhe

The Gasselhöhe is a 2,001-metre peak in the Schladminger Tauern, part of the Niedere Tauern range in the Austrian Alps. It sits on the border between Salzburg and Styria, with Forstau in Styria directly to its east. Nearby summits include the Schober at 2,133 metres and the Rippetegg at 2,126 metres, forming the northern edge of the Kalkspitzen group. The mountain is reached from the Reiteralm plateau, which can be accessed by cable car from Preunegg or by toll road. The final climb from the mountain station takes about an hour. A popular route links the Gasselhöhe with the Rippetegg and Schober, passing the Obersee lake before returning via the Gasselseen lakes. The full circuit takes between four and a half and five hours and passes three staffed alpine huts: Reiteralmhütte, Gasselhöh-Hütte and Eiskarhütte. From the summit, walkers look across to the Lungauer Kalkspitze and Steirische Kalkspitze further south. The plateau below holds the Reiteralm meadows, dotted with grazing cattle in summer. The route offers steady climbs, short descents and wide views over the Tauern valleys.
