Glan Mynys Mount

Glan Mynys Mount stands on the west bank of the River Towy in Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire. It is one of the many earthen mounds built in Wales between the late 11th and the second half of the 12th century. These mounds were constructed from soil and stone and usually surrounded by a ditch. The Normans introduced this type of fortification to Britain, and the Welsh soon adopted the technology. The site is recognised by Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Government, and listed under the reference CM239. The largest concentration of such mounds in Britain is found in the Welsh Marches, including areas now known as Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. Visitors find a simple grassy mound rising above the flat riverside meadows. The River Towy flows past the northern edge, and the remains of the surrounding ditch can still be traced. The mound itself is quiet and open, offering a view across the valley towards the hills of Carmarthenshire.
