St Hilary's Church

St Hilary’s Church stands in the Vale of Glamorgan, a rural landscape of rolling fields and scattered villages. The church itself is a Grade II* listed building in the village of St Hilary, one of eleven churches in the Parish of Cowbridge. Its dedication to Saint Hilary is unusual in Britain and reflects early links with Breton missionaries or local saints. The church became a listed building in 1963, recognising its historic importance. Confusion over its dedication arose from stories connecting Saint Hilary with Saint Cybi, though the two lived centuries apart. The church’s name has been standardised to Saint Hilary since at least the early 20th century. The church is a substantial 14th-century structure in the later English style, with a nave, south aisle, and chancel. A 16th-century embattled tower rises at the west end, while the chancel arch dates to the 12th century. The nave measures 14 metres long and 10 metres wide, including the aisle, and the chancel is 6.7 metres long and 4.6 metres wide. The eastern window of the south aisle is finely designed, and the chancel window contains stained glass bearing the Traherne family arms. A recumbent figure in armour in the chancel commemorates Thomas Bassett of Old Beau Pre, who died in 1423. Inside, visitors find the Bassett Family Tomb Enclosure, which is itself a listed building. A tablet in the south aisle remembers Mrs Traherne, who died in 1796, and her sister. The church was restored in the 1860s at the expense of Mrs Charlotte Traherne, under the direction of architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and Reverend John Montgomery Traherne. A memorial plaque on the lych gate honours parishioners who died in the First World War. The surrounding village offers quiet lanes and views across the Vale of Glamorgan.
