Old Beaupre Castle

Old Beaupre Castle stands in the Vale of Glamorgan near Cowbridge, Wales. It is a ruined medieval fortified manor house built around 1300 and later remodelled in the 16th century. The Basset family owned it for centuries until the 18th century when it passed to the Jones family. The site includes three courts arranged around a gatehouse completed in 1586 and a Renaissance porch finished in 1600. The castle is a Grade I listed building under Cadw’s care.
The castle is worth visiting for its fine example of a medieval manor house transformed during the Tudor period. Its impressive gatehouse and carved porch show the work of the Basset family and craftsmen like Richard Twrch. The site also includes a farmhouse still in use and was used as a filming location for the movie *Ironclad*. The gardens are recognised on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens.
Visitors find a series of fortified buildings arranged around three courts. The gatehouse leads to the middle court, where the great hall and ranges of living quarters stand roofless. The west range once had luxurious rooms with large windows and fireplaces, while the east range remains four storeys high. The grounds include a small car park and a walk across pastureland to reach the castle.
