Church of St Peter & St Paul, Flitwick

The Church of St Peter & St Paul stands in the centre of Flitwick, Bedfordshire, on ground that once held a wooden church and later a Saxon stone building. The present church dates from the 12th century, with a 14th-century south aisle and a late 15th- or early 16th-century nave clerestory and timber-framed porch. The monks of Ruxox Cell served the parish until the Dissolution, when Dunstable Priory’s abbot surrendered the living to the Crown. In 1835 the Norman doorway in the north wall was dismantled and reassembled during rebuilding work. Further restorations in the second half of the 19th century included a new chancel roof, and a chapter house was added in 1983. The church is built of ironstone with ashlar dressings and clay tile roofs, and contains a chancel, nave with north and south aisles, south porch, and a vestry on the north side. Its three-stage west tower is buttressed and topped with an embattled parapet, and houses a ring of seven bells, five of which were cast in the seventeenth century. Inside, the Norman font has a circular fluted bowl, and the pulpit was once part of a three-decker arrangement. Among the memorials is one commemorating the men of Flitwick who died in the two world wars. Visitors find a quiet, spacious interior with clear views of the Norman doorway and the tower’s bell chamber above. The aisles allow easy movement between the chancel and nave, while the timber-framed porch shelters the main entrance. The ironstone walls and clay tiles give the building a warm, earthy tone, and the embattled parapet of the tower adds a simple dignity to the skyline. The chapter house, added in 1983, provides a modern contrast to the ancient fabric.
