Church of St. Basil and St. Paisios, Lincoln

The Church of St Basil and St Paisios stands in Lincoln’s Newport, a quiet corner just east of the Brayford Pool. It was once the Anglican church of St Botolph, built in 1721 with a sturdy tower and later enlarged in the 19th century. In 2021 the building passed to the Greek Orthodox community, who rededicated it to two revered saints. The structure is recognised for its architectural interest and is listed at Grade II. A recent grant will help inspect every stone and beam in detail. The church belongs to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. Its interior now reflects Orthodox worship, with icons and furnishings arranged for liturgy. The bells that once rang for Anglican services were removed when the building changed hands. The nave and aisle still show the 1861 enlargement, while the tower remains from the early 18th century. A full heritage survey will record every feature before any further work begins. Visitors find a calm space where Anglican and Orthodox traditions meet. The exterior combines red brick with stone dressings in a restrained Georgian style. Inside, light falls through clear windows onto plain walls and a simple roof. The area around the church is a mix of terraced houses and small businesses, giving a sense of everyday Lincoln life. The Brayford Pool waterfront is a short walk away, linking the church to the city’s historic core.
