Aberdyfi Castle

Aberdyfi Castle stands near Glandyfi in Ceredigion, Wales. Only a grassy mound called Domen Las remains of the once-timbered fortress. The motte rises about six metres above the marshy ground where the Dyfi and Einion rivers meet. A deep ditch once ringed the base of the mound. The Lord Rhys founded the castle in 1156 after hearing rumours of an invasion by Owain Gwynedd. The castle’s brief life saw swift changes of hands. Roger de Clare captured it in 1158, but the Lord Rhys took it back the same year. In 1216 Llywelyn the Great held an assembly at Aberdyfi. He used the site to divide land among minor rulers of Deheubarth in return for their loyalty. This gathering marked a turning point in his reign, confirming his growing power across Wales. Visitors today walk over the quiet motte and look across the flat meadows. The rivers flow past the base of the mound on two sides. The view stretches towards the hills of Snowdonia on clear days. A low ridge still shows where the timber palisade once stood. The site offers a quiet place to imagine the castle’s short but important past.
