Graf-Wilhelm-Straße 8

The house at Graf-Wilhelm-Straße 8 stands in Bregenz’s upper town, a quiet street lined with historic buildings. Its origins lie in the late Middle Ages, though it has seen changes in the early modern period. The four-storey dwelling has two entrances, one leading down to a vaulted cellar. The street front shows four evenly spaced windows with sandstone frames and louvred shutters. A slight curve in the façade follows the line of the road. It is protected as an official monument of Vorarlberg, listed for its architectural and historical value. The cellar’s barrel vault is a rare survival from the building’s medieval core. Later owners added features typical of the 16th and 17th centuries. The shutters and stonework show how the house was adapted over time. Its modest scale reflects the everyday life of Bregenz’s craftsmen and merchants. Inside, the ground floor rooms open off a central corridor. Original beams remain above the ground storey, while upper floors have simpler 19th-century ceilings. The staircase is a later addition, its balusters matching the period of the most recent remodelling. From the upper windows there are views across the rooftops to Lake Constance. The building stands as a quiet witness to Bregenz’s layered past.
