Seefestspiele Mörbisch

The Seefestspiele Mörbisch is an annual operetta festival held beside Lake Neusiedl in the flat Burgenland countryside. The stage sits in a shallow bay near the village of Mörbisch am See, where the lake’s calm waters form a natural backdrop. The festival began in 1957 with Johann Strauss II’s The Gypsy Baron and now draws around 150,000 visitors each summer. Performances mix operetta with occasional classical musicals, using the lake’s setting in every set design. A special sound system lets audiences hear clearly even from the farthest seats. The auditorium has grown from 1,500 places in 1957 to over 6,000 today. The festival owes much to Herbert Alsen, a Vienna State Opera singer who chose Mörbisch for its climate and championed the project. Early support came from Landesrat Hans Bögl and the provincial tourism plan to develop the lake as a holiday destination. Ferry Windberger, designer of the first Bregenz stage, built the original platform on hundreds of piles beside the bathing beach. In 2018 the festival introduced children’s performances, winning an Austrian music theatre prize for youth productions. The Fraunhofer Institute later supplied a directional sound system used at both Mörbisch and Bregenz. Visitors find a broad stage set against the lake, with the water visible from every seat. The auditorium rises gently from the shoreline, blending the lake into the performance. Programme booklets list long runs of The Gypsy Baron and occasional musicals like West Side Story. A 14-metre Statue of Liberty once towered over Manhattan-style scenery during a postponed production. The surrounding flatlands stretch to the horizon, making the lake stage feel part of the landscape.
