Stadionbad

Das Stadionbad is a public outdoor swimming pool beside the Weser in Bremen’s Östliche Vorstadt. It sits in the Pauliner Marsch flood plain just behind the Weserstadion, reached from Franz-Böhmert-Straße. Built in 1925 by the Allgemeiner Bremer Turn- und Sportverein to plans by Walter Fricke, it began as a 100-metre pool with a 10-metre diving tower and soon hosted the German Swimming Championships. The pool has grown from one large pool to four distinct areas. There is a heated 50-metre main pool with six lanes, a separate diving pool with 10-, 7.5- and 5-metre platforms plus a one-metre board, and a natural-style paddling area with water games and two long flumes. A splash pad and a small children’s pool complete the water attractions. U-shaped lawns on the east, south and west sides give space to sunbathe and look across to the river. Visitors find a beach volleyball court, a synthetic soccer pitch and a children’s playground with sandpit on the south edge. The entrance building at the south-east corner holds kiosks, lockers and a café. In summer the pool draws crowds from nearby districts and beyond, with daily totals sometimes reaching three thousand and annual figures rising to nearly ninety thousand in hot years. Regular events such as the Heartbreaker’s Ball once drew thousands more, making the Stadionbad Bremen’s most popular outdoor pool and a local summer landmark.
