Schneewinkelspitze

The Schneewinkelspitze is a 3,016-metre peak in the Ankogel range of the Austrian Alps. It stands east of Mallnitz in the Austrian province of Kärnten. The Hochalmspitze lies to its north-east and the Säuleck to its west. The Kölnbreinsperre dam sits a few kilometres away. The mountain attracts climbers who follow a marked route from the upper Thomanbaueralm at 1,630 metres. The path crosses alpine meadows to the Gießener Hütte hut before rising over moderate slopes to the Detmolder Grat. This narrow ridge leads to the summit, which bears a stone and a summit book rather than a cross. The first ascent was made in 1898 by Franz Hörtnagl and H. Margreiter during their pioneering traverse of the Detmolder Grat. Views from the top stretch across the Hohe Tauern and the surrounding ranges. The route rewards walkers with high alpine scenery and a sense of quiet remoteness.
