Ankogel Group
The Ankogel Group is a rugged mountain range in the Central Eastern Alps. It lies in the Austrian federal states of Salzburg and Carinthia and forms part of the Hohe Tauern range. The group includes several notable sub-groups such as the Ankogel Massif, the Hochalmspitze Group, the Hafner Group and the Reißeck Group. South of the Möll Valley, the range contains the scenic Maltatal valley and the impressive Fallbach Waterfall. The Ankogel Group is the easternmost section of the High Tauern and borders other ranges like the Goldberg Group to the west and the Salzburg Slate Alps to the north. Its highest peak is the Hochalmspitze at 3,360 metres, while the Ankogel itself reaches 3,252 metres. The Kölnbrein Dam stands within the group, adding a striking feature to the landscape. Visitors find dramatic ridges, deep valleys and waterfalls across the range. The Fallbach Waterfall cascades down a sheer drop in Maltatal, one of the region’s most photographed sights. The dam’s reservoir reflects the surrounding peaks, creating a striking contrast with the wild terrain. Hiking trails lead through alpine meadows and past glaciers, offering views of the Hohe Tauern’s highest summits.
