Garioch Heritage Centre

The Garioch Heritage Centre is a museum in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. It occupies a former locomotive works building that closed in 1969. The centre opened in October 2017 after the Garioch Heritage Society restored the site. In 2018 the society won an award for the best creative reuse of an industrial building. By 2021 the society had secured the land on which the centre stands. The centre is worth visiting for its growing collection of local artefacts. A cast-iron barge recovered from Kirkwood Commercial Park will soon go on display. The barge is believed to be the last survivor of those that once worked on the Aberdeenshire Canal. Temporary exhibitions such as the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry have already drawn visitors. The society continues to add to its holdings with support from the Scottish Land Fund. Visitors find a single-storey building arranged around former railway workshops. The main hall displays tools and photographs from the locomotive works era. A side room hosts changing exhibitions on local themes. Outside, the site retains sections of railway track and loading bays. The centre sits close to Inverurie’s town centre, making it easy to reach.
