River Urie

The River Urie is a small river in Aberdeenshire’s Garioch area. It rises near Bennachie and flows for about fifteen miles before joining the River Don at Inverurie. The Ordnance Survey calls it the River Urie, while locals often use the spelling Ury. Its main tributary is the Gadie Burn. Salmon and trout fishing permits can be obtained along its banks. The river’s name appears in both spellings in historical records. Inverurie itself was once spelled Inverury in the 19th century. Aberdeenshire Council generally prefers the shorter form. The Urie’s course lies entirely within rural Aberdeenshire. Its waters eventually reach the North Sea via the River Don. Visitors find quiet paths beside the river, especially near its junction with the Don. The surrounding landscape is farmland and gentle hills. Bennachie’s slopes lie to the northwest, adding to the scenery. Fishing spots are scattered along the river’s length. The area offers peaceful walks and views of the Garioch countryside.
