All Saints Church, Watermillock

All Saints Church stands in the village of Watermillock on the northern shore of Ullswater in Cumbria. The present building replaced an earlier church destroyed by Scottish raiders in the 15th century. The Tudor church was demolished in 1881 and rebuilt with slate and red sandstone. Its nave follows the foundations of the old church, while the chancel was added later. The tower was heightened in 1884 to its current form. The church holds several memorials and furnishings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The organ was made by Wilkinson of Kendal in 1888 and installed in the west end. A reredos was added in 1934 in memory of Mr T.E. Forster. The choir stalls, pulpit, pews and screen all date from 1881. The chancel was built to honour the Reverend David Pritchard, rector from 1876 to 1880. Visitors find a quiet country church with a mix of old and newer features. The nave and tower remain from the 1881 rebuilding, while the chancel and reredos add later detail. The Wilkinson organ and memorial windows recall local families. The stone memorials to the Spring Rice brothers stand near the entrance. The church’s slate and sandstone walls blend with the landscape around Ullswater.
