Föllik

The Föllik is a solitary hill southwest of Eisenstadt in the market town of Großhöflein in Burgenland. Its flat plateau, about 250 metres by 180 metres, slopes gently southwards. Archaeologists have found traces of a high-settlement from the Wieselburger culture on the summit. A hunting lodge built by the Esterházy family at the end of the 18th century now stands half-ruined on the hilltop. The dark, lime-rich soil on the eastern and south-eastern slopes supports vines of the Zweigelt variety. Local growers cultivate these slopes for wine. A path winds eastwards along the base of the hill, marked by fourteen metal reliefs of Christ’s resurrection created by local artists in 2010. Visitors walk up a gentle incline to the summit and the remains of the lodge. The vineyards on the lower slopes stretch towards the horizon. The Way of Light panels line the eastern route, each plate showing a different moment in the resurrection story.
