Schwarzsee

The Schwarzensee is a mountain lake in the Zillertaler Alps at 2,472 metres above sea level. It sits in the remote Zemmgrund valley, south-west of the Zsigmondyspitze. The smaller Eissee lies above it in the Roßkar at 2,674 metres and now feeds the Zemmbach. The municipal boundary between Finkenberg and Mayrhofen runs through the lake itself. Reaching the Schwarzensee requires a hike along the Berliner Höhenweg from the Berliner Hütte. From the hut the route passes the Eissee before climbing to the Melkerscharte. Crossing the Melkerscharte leads down into the Gunggl valley on the other side. Visitors find a quiet alpine lake surrounded by steep rock walls and high peaks. The water is deep blue and remains cold even in summer. No buildings stand nearby, only rough mountain paths and the occasional chamois on the slopes. The isolation and clear air make it a fine place to rest after the climb.
